NI weather causes disruption across the province

Snow and ice have caused widespread disruption across the province, as a blast of Siberian weather sweeps across the UK.

Wintry conditions are set to continue with a yellow weather warning in place.

John Wylie from the Met Office said the icy blast is set to continue for a number of days:

"Winter weather looks like staying with us for a few more days at least, with Met Office yellow warnings of snow in place until at least Friday.

"Further snow showers to come across many areas, that will give settling snow in some places.

"But the snowfall picture is rather mixed with some places seeing more snow than others.

"Certainly a bitterly cold feel with temperatures by day barely above zero and several degrees below at night and add in the strength of the wind and it's going to feel particularly cold for the time of year," he said.

There is also expected to be widespread travel disruption in the coming days.

Train services have been cancelled between Belfast and Dublin on Thursday.

Operator Translink said the last trains would leave early on Thursday due to a weather warning in the Dublin area.

Cross-border bus services have been cancelled for the rest of Wednesday and overnight.

A red warning is in place in the Republic with 'blizzard-like conditions' expected.

On Wednesday evening, Ireland's Childline service announced it would close.

The ISPCC said the decision was taken 'to protect the health and safety of all staff and volunteers.'
