The charges include murder, two counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm or ammunition with intent to endanger life or property.
44 year old high-profile loyalist Geordie Gilmore was shot in the neck while in his car in the Woodburn estate on Monday.
He was brought to hospital in a critical condition and passed away on Tuesday morning.
Detectives have described the attack as brutal and are appealing for information.
Head of Serious Crime Branch Detective Chief Superintendent Raymond Murray said: “Our thoughts are with the Gilmore family at this time as they come to terms with their loss.
DCS Murray said that the murder could lead to further violence in the town.
"We have all lived long enough in Northern Ireland to know the landscape and the environment and retaliation is a possibility. However, police are working hard to prevent that from happening."
Mr Murray went on to make an appeal to the public for information about what he called a 'brutal and reckless' murder.
“Let me be clear, the gunmen did not care about the local community when they carried out this attack which is evident as one of the bullets missed its intended victim and was found lodged in a house which was occupied at the time," he said.
“We would like to hear from anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area of Blackthorn Park, Pinewood Avenue or The Cherry Walk between 1pm and 2.30pm on Monday.
“Mr Gilmore’s car was a white Vauxhall Insignia – registration YLZ 2220 – did you see this car?
“Those involved had no consideration for local people when they carried out their attack in the heart of this community. Help us remove them from your community and place them before the courts.”
Ulster Unionist MLAs for the area Roy Beggs and John Stewart condemned those behind the incident.
“The murder of George Gilmore and the attempted murder which preceded it must be condemned without reservation," said Mr Beggs.
"These vicious attacks are shocking reminders that there are still people in our society who are prepared to use extreme violence to exert control in parts of the community.
“The events in and around Carrickfergus over the past few days have been horrendous.
"Action needs to be taken to bring a degree of security to the entire community. I support a strong security response by the PSNI to ensure guns are found and removed, so that no one else is caught up in the cross fire of a bloody feud which has gone on for far too long.”
