Murder investigation after man's body found in Co Antrim house

A murder investigation is under way after a man's body was found in County Antrim.

He has been named locally as David Murphy who was in his early 50s.

It is understood the body was discovered by a neighbour at a house on Church Road in the remote area of of Glenwherry between Ballymena and Larne yesterday afternoon.

In a statement, the PSNI confirmed they had launched a murder investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Geoff Boyce said: “A post mortem is due to take place this afternoon. Mr Murphy’s body was located at an address on Church Road at around 1pm yesterday afternoon.

“Our Enquiries are continuing and I would continue to appeal for anyone who has information which may assist our investigation to call us on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 544 of 19/02/19."

Politicians have condemned the murder.

Alliance's Stewart Dickson said: "This is a shocking incident and my thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased at what must be an extremely sad time for them. It will have caused great distress in what is a quiet, rural area.

“It is important the police establish the circumstances of this man’s death. If anyone has any information whatsoever, I would urge them to contact the PSNI with it immediate."

Sinn Féin’s Oliver McMullan added: "This is a quiet area and locals are alarmed at what has happened.

"I would appeal to anyone with information on what happened to bring it forward to the PSNI"
