A man has been shot dead and a woman left in a critical condition after a shooting in County Down.

He has been named locally as 37-year-old Wayne Boylan.

It happened in a house near a golf club, on the Lower Dromore Road in Warrenpoint around on Friday evening.

The woman was taken to Daisy Hill hospital in Newry for treatment to her injuries.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Geoff Boyce confirmed a murder investigation had been launched.

"Police were called to the incident at a house on the Lower Dromore Road at 7.30pm this evening Friday 18 January,'' he said.

"A female has also sustained serious injuries during the incident and has been taken to hospital.''

South Down Assembly member Sinead Ennis appealed for information.

"The community of Warrenpoint are shocked and stunned by this news,'' the Sinn Fein representative said.

"Our first thoughts are with the family of the victim.

"The PSNI have the area sealed off and I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward to assist the investigation.''
