Man jumps from window to escape from gang armed with hatchet

A man's jumped from a first floor window in Newry to escape from a gang of men armed with a hatchet.

They broke into a house on Talbot Street last night and demanded money.

A woman who was also inside the property ran outside to shout for help.

Detective Sergeant Johnston said, “We received a report at around 9pm that three men, one of whom was armed with a hatchet, had forced their way into a property and demanded money.”

“The men proceeded to ransack the house.”

“The male occupant ran upstairs in an attempt to get away and, when the men followed him, jumped out a first window floor, injuring his ankle as a result.”

“At the same time, a female, who was in the house, ran out onto the street to shout for help.”

“The intruders fled on foot.”

“This must have been a terrifying ordeal for the two, who have been left visibly shaken.”

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area around that time and who noticed any suspicious activity to get in touch. Please contact detectives at Ardmore on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1834 of 21/02/20.”
