Meet the NI brand supporting mental health in agriculture
What a fantastic idea!
A recent study from the Farm Safety Foundation discovered that 88% of farmers under the age of 40 rank poor mental health.
During the last year, the coronavirus pandemic will have only increased the mental health effects on farmers and could continue long after the virus has gone.
One concerned Ballymoney born Young Farmer, Hannah Kirkpatrick, has just launched an all-new clothing brand with a unique purpose.
Matter helps raise awareness and encourage mental health support, especially within agriculture.
We caught up with the busy 25-year-old to learn a little bit more about this exciting new venture.
“I suppose the first idea for Matter started early last year; working and living during a global pandemic. I could see first-hand the effect that was having on the mental health of those that work in the agricultural industry. Whether that be in farming or associated businesses.
“Agriculture is such a massive industry here in Northern Ireland, so it’s important that we look after one another and those within that sector. It can be a very physical job, but it can also be mentally straining.”
“Starting something from scratch was definitely no walk in the park,” laughs Hannah. “I had my challenges, from suppliers to stock issues. Thankfully I was able to overcome those hurdles, we’re out the other side and are now live!
Matter currently stocks cosy crew neck jumpers, with the hope to expand their product range very soon.
“We’ve got three slogan crew neck jumpers, available in different colours, each one with a ‘matter’ message, reminding others that it’s ok not to be ok, you will always mean something to someone”
They’re sourced from the UK, then embroidered by a local service, again something Hannah thought was important, then packaged and delivered across Northern Ireland.
“The support since we launched last month has been overwhelming. I think after coming through the pandemic, so many more people have realised the benefit of supporting small businesses with a purpose like Matter.”
Hannah is heavily involved in the Young Farmers Clubs of Ulster; she is the 2021 Vice President. “Over the past couple of years, as an organisation we’ve been trying to break down the stigma that’s attached to mental health, especially amongst young males. The core message behind this brand is that everyone ‘matters.’
10% of all Matter profits will be donated to Northern Ireland’s agri & rural support charity Rural Support.
“This charity is not only close to the hearts of many within the Young Farmers, but it’s a charity that provides crucial support for farmers and farm families across NI, with a free confidential support line. They offer fantastic programmes and mentoring facilities both financially and personally. I am so proud to be able to partner, support and sustain such an important cause.”
