Guide to voting in the General Election

Author: Sasha WyliePublished 11th Dec 2019

Thousands of voters in Northern Ireland will head to the polls on Thursday to elect 18 MPs to Westminster.

This is the third time polls will open this year as we've already voted in the European and Council elections.

This election will decide who represents you in Parliament, meaning it's a different voting system than our Assembly elections.

The candidate with the most votes in each constituency is elected, even if they are chosen by less than half the electorate in their seat.

Our Special Correspondent Sasha Wylie spoke to the Chief Electoral Officer here to find out more about the system.

The two main things to remember on Thursday are bring your ID and place an 'X' beside your chosen candidate.

The Electoral Office for Northern Ireland has processed over 235 000 applications from members of the public seeking to be placed on the Register since the start of this year. This figure is equal to almost 30% of those who generally turn out to vote (815,260 people voted at the 2017 UK Parliamentary election).
