Female pedestrian killed in overnight collision

A 48 year old woman has died after she was knocked down outside Londonderry.

It happened on the Glenshane Road in the early hours of this morning.

The road was closed for a number of hours but has now re-opened.

Police in Derry are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

Inspector Gregory Smyth said: “We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed this collision. If you have any information that could help with our investigation, please contact police at Strand Road on telephone number 101, quoting reference 117 of 18/9/17.

Sinn Féin MP Elisha McCallion has expressed her sympathy following the death:

"The news that a 48-year-old woman has keen killed in a road collision on the outskirts of Derry has come as a shock to the local community.

"This death is a tragedy and will bring sadness to all those involved.

"Any death on our roads is one too many.

"I want to express my sympathy to the friends and family of the woman who lost her life at this sad and difficult time.”
