An appeal for an end to days of violence in Northern Ireland was last night (Monday) ignored.

Tensions manifested themselves in flames again as a JCB digger, barricade of debris, and a phone box were burned in Londonderry's Waterside area.

It was the seventh night of disorder in the loyalist Nelson Drive Estate.

Roads blocked with fires in the Nelson Drive Estate.

Earlier last night, youths attacked a PSNI vehicle in the Nationalist area of Shantallow Derry, following the discovery of a suspicious package near Templemore Road.

The object was later declared a hoax.

Chief Superintendent had called for a halt to the 'senseless' and 'reckless' behaviour which is blighting communities and has injured over 30 officers to date.

He gave the media this update yesterday at PSNI HQ in Belfast.

Meanwhile in County Antrim, there was also further disruption for the third night.

A crowd of young people gathered in the North Road area and lit a fire in the middle of the road, while petrol bombs and fireworks were pelted at police in attendance.

Chief Supt Davy said the attacks in this area were "clearly orchestrated''.

He added: "I believe that there's a small group of disaffected criminal elements that are clearly involved in influencing young people, and I would appeal to young people in those areas not to allow this to happen.''

"I think it's also fair to say that there's probably no coincidence to this. We have been successful in that area in respect on some of these criminal gangs.

"So I think that this perhaps has been a reaction from some of those people who are involved in criminality.''

Asked if he thought the South East Antrim UDA were behind the attacks, he replied: "As I said, I believe that this is a group of disaffected criminal gangs and we will investigate that."
