The news means that there could be 40 redundancies among support personnel.

The service provides non-emergency transfers across the province.

A 30 day consultation on the job losses is due to start on 22 January.

“Our members in the Red Cross ambulance service are angry and upset at this devastating decision," said Michael Mulholland from the union.

“These are loyal, skilled and hard-working ambulance staff who are now facing a very unhappy New Year.

“GMB is incredibly disappointed that Red Cross has failed to respond to our attempts to work with them collectively over recent months and concern for the future employment of our members who have assisted in delivering such a high quality service in Northern Ireland.

“We are further concerned about the process of consultation and would ask for clarity to enable us to offer our members the support required."
