A bomb was found early today in Londonderry.

Police say they received reports around 2am of a suspicious object in the Tamneymore Park area of the city.

Army bomb experts declared it a “viable device” and took away for further forensic examination.

Police say the security alert is ongoing.

Detective Sergeant Brian Reid said: “Police are continuing to conduct follow-up enquiries in the area at this time with some cordons in place but no roads closed. I would like to place on record my thanks to all those affected by the incident for their assistance during this.

I would appeal to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in and around the Tamneymore Park area to contact Police on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 1425 of 30/03/17. Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
