Belfast, Derry and Strabane 'most deprived areas of NI'

Belfast, Londonderry and Strabane dominate the top ten most deprived areas of Northern Ireland, according to the latest government figures.

The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) has released the Multiple Deprivation Measure 2017, the first time the figures have been explored in such detail since 2010.

The overall results were calculated using seven domains:

  • Income
  • Employment
  • Health and Disability
  • Education, Skills and Training
  • Access to Services
  • Living Environment
  • Crime and Disorder

The heaviest weighted domains were Income (25%) and Employment (25%).

The areas that were worst affected in each of the domains were:

  • Income - Creggan - Newry, Mourne and Down.
  • Employment - New Lodge 2 - Belfast
  • Health and Disability - Whiterock 2 - Belfast
  • Education, Skills and Training - New Lodge 3 - Belfast
  • Access to Services - Plumbridge - Derry City and Strabane
  • Living Environment - Botanic 2 - Belfast
  • Crime and Disorder - The Diamond - Derry City and Strabane

The indicators gathered as part of the research will be used to inform councils and policymakers in their decisions.
