Derry Girls earned itself quite the following when it first hit our screens in 2018, and two years later, filming for season three is due to begin in April according to actor Tommy Tiernan!

Of course, if you live in Derry or the surrounding areas - or even in Belfast, where some scenes are filmed - and are dreaming of starring in the popular Channel 4 comedy, you might be keen to know how you can get on the show as one of the extras.

While it is extremely competitive to be the next Jamie-Lee O'Donnell or Saoirse-Monica Jackson, you could be in luck by being in the background!

Although we don't have any info on whether you can audition to be in the upcoming third season just yet, production company The Extras Dept. were on the lookout for extras for the first season, releasing a statement which read, "We are shortly going to begin casting on the much loved and highly acclaimed Channel 4 series DERRY GIRLS!!!! We can't wait to see what the girls get up to this time round."

"Extras participating in the show do have to have valid Basic / Standard or Enhanced Disclosure Certificates that have been issued in the last 18 months. All those aged 16 or over require this certificate."

"Alongside Derry Girls, we also have numerous other productions filming at the moment that also have this requirement." So they might be on the lookout for extras in season three, too!

The show features the exploits of Erin, her cousin Orla and their friends Clare, Michelle and English cousin, James, as they navigate their teens in Derry during the Troubles in the 90s.

Across the UK, the first series of Derry Girls was watched by an average of 2.5 million viewers, making it Channel 4's biggest comedy launch since 2004.

It was a big winner at the IFTAs picking up best comedy with Lisa McGee winning the award for best writer in a comedy or soap.

What happened in the second series of Derry Girls?

Lisa McGee remained tight-lipped after the successful first season, but told RadioTimes.com that she was “toying” with covering the ceasefire and how it “actually unsettled people” as well as Bill Clinton’s 1995 visit to Derry.

She also revealed she wanted one of the girls to get a boyfriend – or for Clare to have a girlfriend – and for James to join a band.

When will Derry Girls series three be on TV?

The six-episode first series premiered in January 2018 on Channel 4, and the second season aired in March 2019 - also with six episodes. A transmission date for Derry Girls series three has yet to be confirmed, but filming is due to start in April. The first season is also on Netflix!
