Unmissable movies coming to NI cinemas in 2022

Anyone else suffering from the January blues yet? After the excitement of Christmas, we all need something to look forward to this month.

With so many exciting new movie releases on the horizon, a trip to the cinema might just be the perfect date night or family day out.

2022 looks set to be a bumper year for cinemas across Northern Ireland, with everything from big-time blockbusters to hilarious comedies and hyped horrors on the way.

Here are 12 blockbuster movies coming up you don’t want to miss 👇

Belfast

Release Date: January 20th

It’s the film we’ve all been waiting for – Jamie Dornan returns to the big screen with Sir Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical film Belfast. It will be available across Northern Ireland from January 20th, so be sure to book your tickets quick, this one is going to sell out in no time!

Moonfall

Release Date: February 4th

The trailer for Moonfall looks epic, this is going to be 2022’s biggest blockbuster from disaster movie specialist Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow). The film asks the question – what happens to the world if the moon gets knocked from its orbit and sent onto a collision course with Earth?

Jackass Forever

Release Date: February 4th

Knoxville, Steve-O and the unlikely team of misfits are back, with the tagline “some people never learn”. This is going to be the ultimate nostalgic comedy, featuring cameos from some familiar Hollywood faces.

The Batman

Release Date: March 4th

With Robert Pattison as Batman and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, you just know this is going to be major. The trailer doesn’t give too much away, but we can’t wait to see Pattison swap his fangs for a cape.

The Northman

Release Date: April 22nd

Filming for The Northman started back in August 2020 at Torr Head, County Antrim, and Ballygally near Larne in Northern Ireland. The film is set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century, starring Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgård. The plot sees a Viking prince seeking justice for his murdered father.

Jurassic World: Dominion

Release Date: June 10th

Chris Pratt is back with his beloved dinosaurs in the sixth instalment in the Jurassic World franchise. This time the dinosaurs are attacking human cities – you can expect lots of blood and gore with this one.

Elvis Presley

Release Date: June 24th

Elvis is Bax Luhrmann’s first film since his iconic spin on The Great Gatsby, back in 2013. Austin Butler will play the starring role of Elvis in this exciting biopic, documenting The King. Tom Hanks takes on the role of Elvis’ scheming manager Colonel Tom Parker, so we can expect great things.

Top Gun: Maverick

Release Date: May 27th

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen.

Don’t Worry Darling

Release Date: September 22nd

Set in the 1950s, Don’t Worry Darling centres on an unhappy housewife (Florence Pugh) and her husband (Harry Styles) who’s harbouring a dark secret. This will be Styles first lead role in Hollywood, and with Olivia Wilde directing, it’s bound to be a showstopper.

Mission Impossible 7

Release Date: September 30th

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

Featuring Tom Cruise’s most dangerous stunt EVER, involving a motorcycle and a cliff edge, Mission Impossible 7 is predicted to be even more thrilling. Originally delayed due to the pandemic, September will be another popular month for cinemas.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Release Date: November 11th

The first Black Panther was a worldwide hit at the Box Office and scooped up an impressive Best Picture Oscar Award back in 2019. Marvel decided not to recast the title role following Chadwick Boseman‘s untimely death last year, which meant this sequel’s script had to be rewritten.

Avatar 2

Release Date: December 16th

13 years since the ground-breaking original movie, the first of four Avatar sequels is tipped our next Christmas #1 in December. Kate Winslet joins the star-studded cast this time round. Much of the performance capture filming was completed back in 2020, but the special features and added effects take that little bit longer to finish.
