If you spend a large part of your daily lives on the Internet - and who doesn't? - you will no doubt have come across Grumpy Cat - even if you didn't know her name. The famous feline, who was the subject many memes, has sadly died at the age of just seven.

The death of the feline Internet star was announced to her fans by her heartbroken family who said, 'Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome.'

The statement continued, 'She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.'

The cat, who was known for her grumpy expressions, became popular on Instagram and across the Internet after her owner's brother posted a photo of her on Reddit. After just two days her photo had over a million likes. Now, the official Grumpy Cat account on Instagram has over 2 million likes, and the posts regularly get thousands of likes.

As well as the popular memes, Grumpy Cat was also the subject of toys, books, and TV Christmas special - Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever. At the height of her fame she was said to be worth around £64 million and even travelled first class!

Speaking to The Mirror back in 2016, Grumpy Cat's owner Bryan said, "She loves to travel. She’s the star, whereas when she’s at home she has to compete with Tabatha’s other pets.

"She sleeps well in her carry case and is very well taken care of. We only travel once or twice a month, and she has her favourite toys and treats."
