An air ambulance is at the scene of a major crash on a main road in to Liverpool city centre.

Merseyside police have confirmed that an unmarked police vehicle, which was responding to an emergency call with blue lights on, was involved in the crash with a and a Ford C-Max Zetec

Fire engines, air ambulance and police are all in attendance on the scene, where the male driver of the Ford was taken to hospital. His condition has been described as serious but stable. Another 2 were treated at the scene.

Emergency services were contacted just after 10 past 9 this morning, and there is now a large cordon in place to both vehicles and pedestrians, including Hill street and the majority Sefton Street, which runs from the city centre toward south Liverpool.

The advise for motorists is to avoid the area.

We also know that a police dog was in the police car involved in the crash, but was okay. The service dog was taken to the vets to be checked over and it's believed that it didn't sustain injuries.

Road closures remain in place in the area as investigative work is being carried out.

Police are now appealing for information, and in a statement via Merseyside police, a spokesperson said:

We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Sefton Street at around 9am today who saw the collision or believes they captured something significant on their dashcam to contact us.
