A man in his 20s has died following a fatal collision with between a pedestrian and a driver in Harlow.
Officers from Essex Police were alerted to an incident taking place on a cycle path just off Momples Road in the town at around 5:30pm on Saturday (March 29th).
The vehicle - believed to be a silver Mitsubishi - had come off the road before hitting the pedestrian and driving away.
Emergency services were called to the scene a short time later, but despite the best efforts of paramedics, the pedestrian - a man in his 20s from London - was pronounced dead at the scene.
Essex Police have confirmed the man's family has been made aware of his death and are being supported by specialist officers.
The vehicle was later discovered as it was being burned out at a nearby underpass, close to the Clock Tower Roundabout.
Working alongside Essex Fire and Rescue Service, police were able to put out the fire and save the car, which is now being forensically investigated.
The force added they were looking into the possibility the incident could be related to a previous crime which involved the theft of a black Ford Fiesta in the nearby Pennymead area of Harlow, which was reported at 4pm.
No arrests have been made regarding the incident, but inquiries are ongoing as officers are working to discover the motive behind the crash.
Speaking on the incident, Detective Inspector Alison Hooper from Essex Police said: "At the centre of this incident is a person who has lost their life in terrible circumstances; we are supporting a grieving family.
“I have a dedicated team working hard to establish the sequence of events which led to this fatal collision and this investigation is making progress.
“We’re particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicles in question in the Harlow area in the hours leading up to this collision.
“I appreciate this is a very serious incident which will cause concern in Harlow, but I’d ask that the public refrain from any unhelpful speculation which could cause further upset.
“We will continue to update on the progress of our investigation. For now I would urge anyone with information which could assist us to please come forward."
