Was it a bird? Nope.

Was it a plane? Nope?

Superman? Nah.

Just 500 drones creating giant festive bakes in the sky!

Greggs fans across Newcastle were sent into a frenzy last night as the stars aligned above Greggs’ Gosforth Bakery.

A unique display of 500 SKYMAGIC drones was seen for miles across the city as a “NASA inspired launch” was captured soaring above its northeast based headquarters, into the cosmos.

In the 8-minute drone light show, measuring twice the size of Big Ben, and ten times the height of The Angel of the North, a Greggs-inspired space rocket launched into the galaxy from Greggs’ Gosforth Bakery - taking an intergalactic route through the Greggs universe, passing classic menu favourites such as the iconic Sausage Roll and Sugar Strand Doughnut, with a smattering of celestial sprinkles.

The astronomical feat, taking inspiration from A Space Odyssey, sees the rocket voyage on a journey beyond the classic Greggs menu - as the surreal combination of tasty planets align, the beloved Festive Bake appears to rotate in 3D, cosmic splendor.

Fans were quick to share their excitement across social media with fans posting about their surprise of seeing flying Greggs products in the skies instead of fireworks, and speculating about what was to come from the on-the-go retailer.

The celestial inspired display came after Greggs shared a cryptic social media tease across its channels on Thursday evening, featuring a 1970s-inspired scientist announcing “I think we’re ready” followed by “Let’s launch.”

The show was a collaboration between Greggs and SKYMAGIC, the leading drone light show company who flew an unforgettable drone Corgi above Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and a 400-strong drone whale above Windsor Castle for the Coronation of the King. The same team lit up the skies of Newcastle last month for SELA and Newcastle United to celebrate the return of European football to the city.

In true Greggs humour and as part of the display, the Festive Bake was seen slipping into an iconic Greggs bag as the logo shimmered above the city, a homage to true Geordie culture, ahead of the bake’s return to shops nationwide from this Thursday.

The Festive Bake, which launched in 2009, has since gained a cult following. Fans eagerly await the return of the beloved bake each year, with some fans even taking to X pleading for the bake to be launched as early as September!

Other Festive Bake fanatics have shared that the festive season can’t well and truly commence until their first bite of the Festive Bake.
