Assault in Newton Abbot pub being treated as attempted murder

A man in his 50's is in custody after being arrested

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a man and a woman in Newton Abbot

Police were called to reports of an assault near the White Hart pub in East Street in the early hours of this morning (Sunday 23rd February 2025).

Officers say the male suspect left the scene following the attack.

Police enquiries led officers to a nearby address a short time later where a man was arrested. He remains in custody.

A woman in her 40s as well as a man in his 50s sustained injuries. Both were treated on the scene before being taken to Torbay Hospital. None of the injuries are described as life-changing or life-threatening.

Detective Inspector Nicky Baker from Devon and Cornwall Police said:

“We would like to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and we believe the suspect and the victims are known to each other.

“We know that the incident was witnessed by a number of people and we would ask anyone who has not yet spoken with police to please get in touch.

“We would particularly like to speak with anyone who may have captured the incident on their mobile phones, vehicle dashcam, or on CCTV.
