Barry Gray has claimed players have too much power in football.

The former Cliftonville boss was opening up about his 20-month rocky spell at Solitude.

And as a guest on our latest BetMcLean Show, in association with NIFL, now available to view on Cool FM’s Facebook page (see link below) and via podcast, Gray speaks about dramas on and off the pitch.

He parted ways with the Reds at the start of the year after a poor run of form.

“If results are not going according to plan and you need to make a change to steer your season back on course,” he says.

“You have Option 1 - getting rid of five or six or even 10 players.

“Option 2 get a new management team in place that can maybe get different things out of players that are currently there.

“So you have got all the challenges of players in contract – boards are under massive pressure to make decisions.”

Despite the verbal abuse he got from some Cliftonville fans near the end of his tenure, Gray says he holds no grudges.

“It is frustrating when you hear that but you cannot challenge it – when you have passionate supporters like Cliftonville have you can’t ask them to switch it on and off,” he says.

“I don’t hold any grudges about how I was treated because largely the treatment I have received from Cliftonville fans has been brilliant”
