Healy helping to extend Waterworth's scoring run

Linfield striker Andy Waterworth says manager David Healy deserves credit for helping to improve his game.

The 30 year old recently scored his 20th of the season to put him on 99 goals for the Blues. He's enjoying working under the former Northern Ireland forward.

"He Healy has been brilliant. We would disagree quite a lot, we would argue quite a lot and he would happily tell me when I'm doing things wrong - but I know deep down he wants what's best for me," said Waterworth.

He's also been pleased by Healy's determination to help adapt his game, which Waterworth believes could prolong his career.

"He sees a part of my game that really needs improved and he doesn't just think, 'Well, Andy's coming 31' - he really works on it. I am playing differently now, and as long as I'm on the pitch, I'm enjoying it, I'm happy."

Waterworth admits it's been slightly difficult to alter his game and ignore his instincts. But he's on course for his most prolific season in Blue, as Linfield chase Crusaders, and try to secure the Irish Cup.

"I love running at defenders, but the manager wants me to take it in more and become a focal point. We work a lot on the physicality and the wee clever things, those things I never had. I would always just go for the ball, but now I'm sticking and trying to win free kicks."

Waterworth found himself in and out of favour with Healy at the beginning of the season. However, he's worked his way back into the fold, and will lead the Linfield line into the crucial closing stages of the season.

"At the start of the year I was left out through poor performances, and it's just good to be back. I feel better than I've ever felt. I do realise though that when I play 2 games a week I'll feel it in my legs."

Linfield continue their pursuit of Crusaders this weekend at home to Ards.
