Portugal freeze - as NI prepare to attack
By Alex Keery in FRANCE
Iceland produced one of the shocks of Euro 2016 so far last night – holding Ronaldo’s Portugal to a 1-1 draw.
It is the smallest populated nation to have every played at a major final.
Hungary, which finished third in the qualifying group, Northern Ireland topped, are leading the way in Group F after a 2-0 win over Austria in Bordeaux.
Now, Johnny Evans says Northern Ireland have no choice but to go out and attack Ukraine.
But he says it is not the end of the line if they only grab a draw.
After defeat to Poland in Nice, the dynamic has changed.
Northern Ireland will need at least a point when they play Ukraine in Lyon tomorrow night.
Speaking to us from the team training base in Lyon Evans said: “We can still beat Germany in the last game and get a draw against Ukraine but we need to get a result.
“I think a win would give us a great belief going into the last game.
“It would be great for the players and the fans that we go into the last game with something to play for.”
Reflecting on the opener against Portugal, the West Brom defender added: “Looking back on the game there were things we didn’t do that we’re good at like closing people down, competing and being more physical, and stamp our authority on the match.”
Striker, Kyle Lafferty said some of the players were "over-awed" by the occasion on Sunday, but Evans doesn't agree there.
One thing is clear though, the squad knows a change is needed on the pitch, but they remain confident their tournament is far from over.
