Northern Ireland is set to be lashed by non-stop rain and gale-force winds this week as a deep area of low pressure approaches from the Atlantic.

A stubborn ramped up jet stream sitting above the UK&Ireland is to blame for the recent spell of unsettled weather.

According to The Met Office, prolonged rainfall could cause localised flooding in parts of the the country during Friday.

"A band of heavy rain is expected to move east with 15-25 mm of rain falling widely and perhaps 40-60 mm over higher ground. This will be in addition to other spells of heavy rain earlier in the week affecting a similar area. Rain will be accompanied by strong winds with gusts of 50 mph possible inland and perhaps 60 mph around some coasts."

The Met Office's weather warning comes into affect from 09:00 on Friday lasting through until 21:00.

Motorists are being urged to take care when driving and commuters using public transport may experience delays to services.

"Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures."

Despite the forecast rain temperatures will remain above normal for this time of year.

The relentless stormy weather will last into the weekend and throughout next week, with the Met Office warning of a stormier-than-usual long range forecast.
