Downtown to broadcast a special tribute to Trevor Campbell (Big T) on Boxing Day
Legendary Northern Ireland broadcaster Trevor Campbell (Big T) died earlier this year in hospital following a short illness at the age of 76.
Downtown’s Content Director Stuart Robinson says it is only right Trevor’s legacy and the impact he made on radio in Northern Ireland is remembered and celebrated.
“Besides being a much-loved friend and colleague to everyone here at Downtown, Trevor was a legend of the airwaves - ‘radio royalty’ if you will. Everyone who came through the radio industry over the past 50 years in Northern Ireland knew of ‘Big T’ and many including myself marvelled in his ability to command big audiences’ decade after decade. He was a true giant of the local airwaves - the like we will never have again”.
Trevor’s long-time colleague and friend John Rosborough who was Programme Director at Downtown Radio during the 80’s and 90’s will return to Downtown to host the special tribute programme.
John said “ Having known Trevor from the months prior to Downtown going on air in March 1976, it was an honour to be asked to produce this programme as a tribute and celebration of his Radio Days.
Hopefully listeners will appreciate the variety of sound clips chosen to remind us of how skilful and great a broadcaster he was over such a long career”.
In the special show to be broadcast on Boxing Night at 7pm (in what was Trevor’s original Downtown time slot) John will tell Trevor’s story, reflecting on his unique broadcasting style and his achievements as the longest serving presenter in Northern Ireland Radio and in UK Commercial Radio, and hearing from music artists and listeners who loved him most.
The programme can be heard at 7pm on Thursday 26th December on both Downtown Radio and Downtown Country or can be heard on our new Downtown app ‘Rayo’.
