The mum of little Castlederg boy Billy Caldwell has spoken of her relief now that they have returned home for the first time in six months.

The 11-year-old has spent much of his time recently in a hospital in Los Angeles where he was treated for a type of epilepsy resulting in potentially fatal seizures.

Towards the end of their stay in the States they were forced onto the streets due to the sheer cost of Billy’s treatment.

Charlotte Caldwell told Downtown & Cool FM that this was an extremely tough time for them.

“These were among the darkest days we had in LA,”

But they arrived home on Monday night and already things are looking up.

Charlotte revealed they are now able to access the specific type of cannabis oil Billy's American doctors had prescribed for him.

She said: “It’s absolutely incredible that Billy is home and he is able to avail of the treatment he needs.”

Meanwhile, Billy will have to go back to the US in eight weeks’ time for potentially life-saving brain surgery.

“It was like Santa had come again to Billy – it would have done you good to see the look on his face and his wee smile,” he said
