More than 26,000 students throughout Northern Ireland were today (Thursday) preparing to get their A-level and AS results.

it is understood top grades will be lower than in previous years.

Following several years of disruption and interim arrangements, this year has been described as marking the completion of the transition from measures put in place during the coronavirus pandemic - such as the cancellation of exams, reduced assessment criteria and generous grading.

Exam board CCEA indicated earlier in the week that grades overall awarded this week will be lower than during the pandemic years, but directly comparable to those issued before 2020.

Stormont Economy Minister Conor Murphy has encouraged those receiving exam results, and their parents/carers, to contact his department's Careers Service for free, professional, impartial advice and guidance.

"It is important that young people receiving their exam results today know that professional advice is available to help them navigate the next stage of their career journey," he said.

"Whatever results you have received today, my department's Careers Service can outline the wide range of opportunities available, based on the most up-to-date labour market information.

"I want to wish all students best wishes for the future and reassure you the Careers Service is ready to support you on your next steps."

The Controlled Schools’ Support Council (CSSC) acknowledged the "hard work" of pupils across Northern Ireland.

Mark Baker, Chief Executive, CSSC said: "I would like to commend pupils on their commitment to learning and to recognise their achievements both today and throughout their primary and secondary education.

“As they embark on the next chapter of their lives, we wish them every success whether they choose to pursue opportunities in further and higher education or employment.

“I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff in controlled schools for their tireless efforts in supporting our young people to reach their full potential.”

For immediate advice and guidance please contact the Careers Service by calling 0300 200 7820, lines are open 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
