Fresh inquests recommended into McGurk's Bar bombing

Relatives of those killed in a loyalist bomb attack in Belfast during the Troubles say new inquests have been recommended by the Attorney General.

Fifteen people, including two children, were killed in the blast at McGurk's Bar in 1971.

The news comes just days before the 1st of May deadline when no new Troubles-era inquests or civil court cases will be heard under the terms of the UK Government’s controversial new Legacy Act.

Legacy inquests which have not been concluded by then, will be transferred to the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR).

The McGurk’s Bar attack was carried out by the UVF.

The families of the victims believe security forces had knowledge of the attack in advance and could potentially have prevented it.
