A Portadown pensioner has become one of the UK's oldest coronavirus survivors.

May May who is just under a week away from her 98th birthday beat Covid-19 in just three weeks.

The Rosemount Care Centre resident was seriously ill at one stage but battled through.

May told Downtown & Cool FM, that she was simply glad to be alive.

"I'm now feeling as good as anyone could feel," she said.

And she was full of praise for the "caring" staff at the home where she was treated for the virus.

Care home deputy manager Julieann McClure said May was a truly remarkable woman and had put up an incredible fight.

She said beating the illness gave all of the staff a vital lift.

"May was our first lady who was diagnosed with the virus and had been very unwell at times - not able to see her friends, not able to see her family," she said.

"But this woman's strength and determination was there for all to see. She fought this virus and she fought this virus well."

Julieann said it has been difficult for care home staff but that they were determined to fight the virus together.

"Overall this was a very scary time for both staff and residents but we all pulled together as a team and we all decided that we would appraoch this head-on," she said.

"Staff morale has been great - we all have one goal - and anyone who has got the virus they are getting fantastic care."
