Downtown Radio & Cool FM launch 'Invest in Life' campaign
Almost 1000 people have died by suicide in Northern Ireland in the past three years.
Last updated 10th Sep 2017
In 2015, the province recorded the highest suicide rates in the UK, as well as the highest on record.
The most recent figures from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency show that between August 2013 and August 2016, 909 deaths in Northern Ireland were registered as suicides.
According to the NISRA, “suicide statistics provide an indicator of mental health and are important for monitoring trends in deaths resulting from intentional (and probable) self harm.”
The agency also says it is “widely used to inform policy, planning and research…and enable policy makers and support services to target their resources most effectively.”
Now, in a bid to tackle the rising rates here, Downtown Radio & Cool FM is launching an exclusive campaign calling for more ongoing investment and resources for services helping those affected.
World Suicide Prevention day takes place on Sunday (September 10) and highlights the escalating problem on a national scale.
Over the next few weeks we will be highlighting the worrying extent of the problem closer to home.
Starting on Monday, we will be running the start of a series of in-depth interviews with people affected by the issue. From family members grieving loved ones to those who have tried to take their own lives, we hear the human side of the problem blighting Northern Ireland.
We want to hear from YOU throughout this campaign.
We need YOUR support.
Together, we can invest in life.
