Police have asked parents to make sure they know where their children are at night following the incidents in the Twinbrook and Victoria parade areas of Belfast.

Some as young as 14 were burning bins, vandalising property and throwing stones at the PSNI at the bottom of Victoria Parade in the New Lodge.

Meanwhile, bottles and large pieces of mansonary where thrown by young people in the Twinbrook area which damaged a number of vechiles last night.

No-one was injured during the attacks.

Sinn FĂ©in Councillor JJ Magee praised the efforts of youth outreach workers in the New Lodge area who worked to quell the incidents of anti-social behaviour.

JJ Magee said:

“The Fire Service was also called to the area. This call-out diverts a vital emergency service away from its primary role and could put others at serious risk.

“I want to praise the efforts of youth outreach workers who worked with the young people in an effort to quell the trouble and the area is now quiet.

“There are local children being put at serious risk by the actions of a small and unrepresentative minority and I appeal to parents and community leaders to do all in their power to prevent any further incidents of this behaviour."
