Step Inside offers those with an interest in media and the creative arts an opportunity to see how various mediums combine to make an award winning radio station.

Based at Cool FM and Downtown Radio you will have an opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes and what it takes to make radio in the 21st Century.

Simply choose the course you’d like to be part of, choose the date* that suits you and send us some details about you and that’s it. Places are limited and will be offered on a first come basis.

SI/01 Introduction to Commercial Radio

The weekend course for the ‘Introduction to Commercial Radio’ will give you a basic insight into the everyday workings of how different departments run within a commercial radio station.

If you’re looking to get an oversight of how commercial radio works, then this course would be really beneficial for you. All departments work together very closely on a daily basis and it is important to have a basic knowledge of what each person’s job entails. We hope that this course will be useful for you and provide you with the basic starter skills to move forward within the industry. Max.12

SI/02 - StudioSkills

This course is ideal for somebody who would like to be a presenter, show producer or audio producer, and wants to increase their skills using the studio hardware and software.

For this course we’ll show you how the stations desks work, how the radio play-out system works, how to use the audio editing system. Other equipment used in a radio studio might include phone systems, talkback systems and ISDN codes.

Many of these skills are transferrable to other commercial radio stations and can be taught at varying degrees. This two-day course will cover all the basics required to use a commercial radio studio, allowing even an absolute novice to feel confident in using a radio studio. Max. 12

SI/03 -COMMERCIAL CREATIVE PROCESS

Don’t you just love listening to your favourite songs on the radio and then they get rudely interrupted by those annoying adverts! Well, those adverts are a very important part of commercial radio. Find out who writes them, and what work goes into their production?

This weekend course will give you a behind the scenes look into script writing & creative production. We’ll look at the good, the bad and the ugly in radio advertising. We’ll also look at the legal stuff, voice overs, music, jingles, sonic logo’s and get hands on practical experience to write and produce your own advert.

By being taught by industry professionals you’ll gain a valuable understanding of script writing, and develop brilliant new skills for any future career. Importantly, you’ll realise just how much creativity goes into radio advertising – this is an exciting place to be, where you need to make the most of every second for every client. Max 12

SI/04 - Getting the Story Right: Introduction To Broadcast Journalism for Today’s World

If you are serious about developing a career in journalism this course is for you. It is for anyone passionate about finding and telling stories, and communicating information to new audiences in new ways.

The course focuses on presentation, voice quality, writing, law, interviewing, and of course using the kit and software. Within hours of the course starting you will be reading your first bulletins, and by the end of it you’ll be part of the team producing a live radio news programme.

In addition, we’ll teach you a range of other relevant skills. The course is demanding, intensive and practical but if you are serious about becoming a journalist this is the perfect starting place. SI/05- Introduction to Presenting

We might be talking to millions of people but for us presenting is personal. It is one to one. It’s relationship building with every listener.

Over 2 sessions, this course aims to teach you basics skills in presenting. Full of advice, tips and tricks and hopeful will press the right buttons to help carve out your presenting career.

You will get behind a microphone and hear the sound of your own voice! It is important you develop your own individual presenting style and it’s vital you find relatable and engaging content. This is an incredible opportunity to learn from a leading presenter, and by the end of the course you will even have some audio to take away and use on your own demo.

Two Evening course – 6pm to 9pm (Wednesday & Thursday – Lead Tutor - **David Gordon**)- Max 10 people.

SI/06- Sound Production/Imagining PK

What is station sound production? Put simply, it’s everything that has the station’s name attached to it. This course will take you through exactly what goes into making a radio station sound fresh and engaging for its specific audience. We will take you through how to effectively brand a radio station on air. We will look at how to manage creativity, script writing, voices overs, effects and beat matching. Ever wondered how DJ Earworm creates his amazing mash ups–well, this course will teach you how.

We will also take an in-depth look at Protools and discover how best to use effects and samples to enhance your production work.

This course is hands on – it is a chance to work with state of the art technology alongside some of the country’s best station sound producers.
