Hilary Duff has confirmed that the Lizzie McGuire reboot isn’t happening and fans are devastated.
Hilary shared a message with fans on Instagram who have been desperate to see the star return to the role of Lizzie.
In a sincere Instagram post Hilary shared with her fans, ‘I’ve been so honoured to have the character of Lizzie in my life. She has made such a lasting impact on many, including myself.’
The heartfelt message then explained, ‘I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen. I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves.’
Hilary continued ‘We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her.
‘I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align.’
She then jokingly signed off the message to her 16 million followers saying, ‘Hey now, this is what 2020s made of.’ Which any Lizzie super fan knows is a play on the song from the Lizzie McGuire movie. 💔
A number of episodes for the new series had already been completed but reports claim that Disney were not pleased with the mature content that the new series had adopted, which led to Hilary Duff ‘begging’ Disney+ to put the reboot on HULU so the PG rating could be dropped.
Production was then called to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic but crew and cast were still hopeful they could make it work and return to production.
Lizzie McGuire was on Disney Channel from 2001 – 2004 and only had 65 episodes but it had a huge following. Which resulted in the show getting its own film, The Lizzie McGuire movie which was released in 2003.
The show followed 13-year-old Lizzie and her best friends Gordo (Adam Lamberg) and Miranda (Lalaine) going through the awkward moments of teenage life, with Lizzie’s inner thoughts being displayed by an animated version of herself.
The return of the iconic show was set to see Lizzie return as a 30-year-old and what struggles modern women go through in day to day life. Fans had grown up watching this character and would have been at a similar age watching Lizzie as an adult.

Another comment came from actress Sophie Turner who wrote, ‘NO LIZZIEEEEEE NOOOOO.’ We feel the same way, Sophie.
As Hilary said, ‘This is what 2020s made of’ so it’s time to go and watch the Lizzie McGuire Movie on repeat till we are over this news.
