After more than three years on EastEnders, Bonnie Langford has confirmed that she will be leaving the popular TV soap. Bonnie plays the role of Carmel Kazemi and was originally only due to appear in the soap for six months. However, three-and-a-half years later, she has recently become the centre of a storyline involving her son Shakil, who recently lost his life due to a fatal knife wound.

Last week, viewers saw Carmel break down at the funeral of her son Shakil in a groundbreaking episode for the soap, which featured true-life interviews from the families of knife attack victims.

The scenes received a huge amount of praise, and many fans took to Twitter to express their emotions.

However, it has now emerged that Bonnie is set to leave the soap later this year, taking up a new role, off screen at London’s Theatre Royal, playing the role of Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street.

A statement from the actress said, “I’ve had a wonderful three-and-a-half years at EastEnders and it’s been a privilege to be part of such an iconic show. My storyline has been such an incredible experience and I’m honoured to be part of something so powerful and poignant. However, I’ve known since the beginning of this storyline it would always lead to Carmel having to take a break from Walford.”

Despite the news that Bonnie will be leaving EastEnders, it is thought that the 'door will be left open', so there is a possibility that we might see her character return to Albert Square.

Tiffany Butcher - Maisie Smith

Tiffany Butcher was cute as a button when she first arrived on EastEnders, with a streak of mischief that any smart Walford resident could spot a mile off. Nowadays the talented Maisie Smith looks VERY grown up (we want her hair!), and is still very keen to pursue an acting career. Speaking about what she learned from her role on the soap, she said: "Perhaps my most useful lesson has been that while this is an amazing experience, whether you are famous or not, directors can be quite strict, so you must listen all the time and be punctual....Working to such a tight schedule can also mean very long days and I do get tired – but I still can't wait to go back in the next time."

The final date for Bonnie leaving EastEnders hasn't been confirmed yet, however she has said, "I’m not leaving just yet, there’s still plenty more to come from Carmel."

EastEnders continues on BBC One.
