5 Seconds of Summer: 'We’re Not The New One Direction'

The Australian chart sensations distance themselves from 1D

Globe conquering pop-rock sensations 5 Seconds of Summer have insisted that they’re not the new One Direction.

The Australian four-piece are good friends with One Direction after supporting them on the North American and Australian leg of Take Me Home tour last year, but musically at least, they reckon they’re a very different.

Speaking about the decision to join 1D on tour, 5SOS’s Luke Hemmings told Billboard: "We were a bit worried at first. People were already calling us the new One Direction in Australia, but in our minds we're a lot different from them.

“We play guitars. We're rockier. But we thought that if you put us right next to each other, it would actually show people how different we are."

Ashton Irwin chipped in: "We're not a boy band - we're a band. We don't want to be called the next One Direction. That's not us."

In fact, Michael Clifford reckons they have more in common with punk bands like Blink-182 and All Time Low than their pop counterparts.

"We have definitely been influenced by punk and rock bands,” he said. “But we're not ashamed to say that we want to get our music to as many people as possible."

5 Seconds of Summer have spent much of the past year recording their debut album between London and Los Angeles.

Their single ‘She Looks So Perfect’ debuted at number one on the Vodafone Big Top 40 last month.
