Madonna was in Auckland for her Rebel Heart world tour when she broke down on stage.

Following the judge's decision last week to let her son stay in London with his father, Madonna was clearly upset telling the audience, "It's true, there's no love stronger than a mother to her son. And if I talk about him too much, I might cry."

With a wavering voice she continued, "But I would like to dedicate this song to him. It's a love song for a man, but I know he'll be one, one day."

She then paused and said, "I hope he hears this somewhere and knows how much I miss him."

The 57-year-old singer and ex-husband Guy Ritchie have had a stressful and very public custody battle over their son, 15-year-old Rocco.

Last week a judge in New York stated that Rocco is to remain with Guy and his wife Jacqui Ainsley in London, where he is currently at school.

Justice Kaplan 'scolded' the pair over the way they have dealt with the custody battle saying, "Frankly both parties have chosen to live their lives in a very public way and may welcome the publicity, but the child has not.

"He would like this matter resolved and the issues concerning him and his family in the most private way possible."

The case is expected to return to court later in the month where Madonna will present her list of demands. These are believed to include a time set aside each week when she and her other children can talk to Rocco and the 'right to have a say in her son's education, and reassurance about her son's whereabouts'.

Earlier today Madonna took to Instagram to sum up her feelings with a quote from author Charles Bukowski.
