Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell have been confirmed as the lead characters of the second season of HBO’s True Detective.

The eight part series will be set in California and stars Farrell as detective Ray Velcoro and Vaughn as criminal Frank Semyon.

The gritty first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as warring detectives hunting a serial killer in Louisiana and was met with widespread critical acclaim when it aired earlier this year.

It’s currently unclear whether McConaughey or Harrelson will have any involvement in the new series.

Farrell’s character Ray Velcoro is described as "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him."

While Vaughn’s Frank Semyon is "a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner."

Filming is due to begin later this autumn with a premiere date tentatively set for summer 2015.
