Director Danny Boyle has confirmed that a sequel to the infamous Trainspotting is due to start filming next year.

The film made overnight stars of the three lead actors, Ewan McGregor, Johnny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle and set director Danny Boyle. Based on the book of the same name by Irvine Welsh, the film is about drug addiction in Edinburgh and will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next year.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Danny Boyle explained that they would have a tight window in which to do the filming next year due some of the cast having prior commitments with TV series in the US.

“Either you wait for the contract to run down, which could be as late as three years, or you kind of try and do it in this window,” Danny said, “but all four lads Ewan McGregor, Johnny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle and Ewen Bremner are back in.”

He went on to say, “we’re doing it for less than $20 million, and that’ll give us control of the film so we can make the film we want to make. That’s as much as you can get without being answerable to anybody."

The director also confirmed he has had a meeting with Film4 who helped produce the original film, to discuss the project and he hopes they will be on board.

The problem with many sequels is that they aren't as strong as the original, however Danny has said that John Hodge (who won an award for his work on Trainspotting) has written the script, which will be "put under a very fierce spotlight by everyone".
