Singer Sandi Thom reveals teenage cancer scare

It's made her more health aware

Singer Sandi Thom has revealed she had a cancer scare when she was a student in Liverpool.

The star – who reached number one with the song ‘I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)’ – was encouraged by her mum to get a smear test while in her teens. That’s despite the average age for getting a smear test being 20 in Scotland and 25 in the UK.

The test said she had abornormal cells and she'd need more checks in case they were pre-cancerous. This led to a doctor suggesting she should get the cells removed with laser therapy.

Although she was studying performing arts in Liverpool, she says she went back to Scotland for the treatment to be near her family. She recalled holding the nurses hand and crying through it.

She’s now encouraging more women to keep an eye on their health and get regular checks.

The singer, who is pregnant with her first child, spends her time between the UK and the USA. Her new single 'Eartquake' is released this month.
