Sam Smith's taken to Instagram to explain his four new tattoos, including the words 'honesty' and 'alone'.

The first shows the equality sign on his wedding finger to express his views on gay marriage and beliefs that everyone should be equal.

He explained that his second was inspired by one of the oldest tattoos to be found on a mummified body that was found buried alone in the ice.

The third is sentimental again with the word 'honesty' on his arm. He says it's a word he lives by, adding that it's also a promise that he'll keep his music that way.

You might think it's a bit glum to have the word 'alone' tattooed onto your body forever, but Sam insisted it's positive.

In the caption he wrote "And lastly - this is just me being a melancholy t**t haha. I do see it as a small positive thou... No longer lonely... Just alone... Which is ok x thought I'd share these with you because I love them".

It's thought they were designed by Ukraine-born artist Stanislava Pinchuk.

He's currently on tour in Australia.
