A controversial Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume has caused a huge storm on social media.

The men’s costume, which is being sold on wholesalehalloweencostumes.com, anytimecostumes.com and American retailer Spirit Halloween, parodies the Vanity Fair magazine cover where Caitlyn first revealed her transgender look.

The blurb on wholesalehalloweencostumes.com reads: “If you want some "Vanity" this Halloween then try wearing the Unisex Call Me Caitlyn Costume.

“This ensemble is designed after the one worn by the newly transformed Olympic gold medallist as she made her debut on the cover of a magazine and will make you the top news story of the night when you show up to party dressed as her.”

Since news of the costumes erupted online, unsurprisingly many Twitter users have vented their anger at the outfit.

One user, @madimoiselle, wrote: “In all honesty if you dress as Caitlyn Jenner for Halloween expect me to remove you from my life in every way, shape, and form.”

Similarly unimpressed, @TakeTheTitan said: “I just found out that they're manufacturing Caitlyn Jenner costumes for Halloween....... Probably the single-most disrespectful thing ever.”

While @gringatears blasted: “They're selling Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costumes. Preparing myself for all the bigotry that's gonna go down in October already.”

!

However, @i_toothtaker pointed out that there hasn’t been a similar fury over other costumes that could be perceived as controversial.

They commented: “Mass outcry over Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume but nothing about the ongoing Indian Chief, Mexican mariachi, Geisha or other costumes.”

One irate person has set up a change.org petition calling for the “transphobic” costume to be removed from retailer Spirit Halloween’s site.

The strongly worded accompanying blurb reads: “To Spirit Halloween: We demand that you revoke your ideas and production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume for Halloween. With a reputation of sexist, racist, and culturally appropriative costumes, we are concerned that this costume will continue your oppressive tradition with a transphobic costume of Caitlyn Jenner.”

!

Spirit Halloween have defended their costume calling it a “celebration” writing in a statement to Huffington Post: “At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes.

“We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that.”

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce, first revealed her new look and name on the 1st June via the now famous Annie Leibovitz Vanity Fair shoot.

The former Olympic gold medallist wrote on Twitter at the time: “I'm so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can't wait for you to get to know her/me.”
