You'll never guess what the 'Word of the Year 2015' is

The ‘Face with Tears of Joy' emoji has been crowned Oxford Dictionaries' 'Word of the Year 2015'.

While it's not technically a word is makes up a fifth of all emojis sent in the UK.

Every year Oxford Dictionaries release a 'Word of the Year' which is "a word or expression chosen to reflect the passing year in language".

Partnering with mobile technology firm SwiftKey, Oxford Dictionaries have found that this particular emoji is a clear winner both in the UK and the US.

Its usage has increased significantly, up from 4% last year to 20% this year with similar figures in the US.

In addition to the 'Word of the Year' Oxford Dictionaries have shortlisted some other words which have "gained linguistic currency during 2015", these are included in the poll below.
