The MTV Europe Music Awards: Full Winners List

See who the big winners were at the Glasgow ceremony

One Direction won in three categories at the 20th MTV Europe Music Awards - but failed to turn up for the show in Glasgow.

The boy band were named Best Pop Act and Best Live Act - and also picked up the prize for Biggest Fans. Ariana Grande was the night's other big winner.

Although 1D did not attend the EMA show in person, having performed on X Factor earlier in the evening, they recorded a video message to accept the award for their fans.

Harry Styles said: "We're so sorry we can't be with you tonight. Thank you so much for this, the award for Biggest Fans.

"Because of that we obviously, obviously want to thank our incredible fans - thank you so, so much for all your support. We can never thank you all enough."

Ariana Grande was triumphant in the Best Female category, and saw her hit Problem scoop the Best Song award.

The 21-year-old American singer said she was doubly grateful to the EMAs, because meeting Iggy Azalea at last year's show led to working with the Australian rapper on the winning number.

"This is absolutely crazy," Grande said.

Nicki Minaj hosted the show at the SSE Hydro arena, and also took home the prize for Best Hip-Hop Artist.

"I've been learning so much about your beautiful country and culture ... I've pretty much become Scottish," she told the crowd.

She honoured the host nation by rapping about whisky and shortbread - and singing a snippet of The Proclaimers' anthem 500 Miles.

Katy Perry and Australian group 5 Seconds of Summer each won two awards, while Justin Bieber was named Best Male Artist, but none were on hand to collect their gongs.

Other high-profile non-attendees included Beyonce and Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, who had to pull out due to illness.

But Ozzy Osbourne - introduced by guitar hero Slash as a man who "scares the hell out of most people, and all bats" - did appear at the show to accept a Global Icon accolade.

And thousands of young Scottish music fans in the arena - and a global TV audience - watched a spectacle featuring performances from acts such as Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, Enrique Iglesias and U2.

Former Baywatch and Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff also got a rousing cheer when he took to the stage in a kilt.
