Liam Hemsworth was bursting with excitement when he chatted with American TV hosts Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Ripa about his recent wedding.

Liam married Miley Cyrus - or, as Liam pointed out - Miley Ray Hemsworth - late last year.

The Australian actor, best known for his work in the Hunger Games movies who has just finished filming Isn't It Romantic with Rebel Wilson, pretended to choke up as he explained to Kelly and Ryan about Miley’s change of name, but it was clear that underneath the clowning, the emotion was real.

He told them, “She'll still be obviously known as Miley Cyrus but she took my name which is great.

“That was honestly one of the best things about it. I didn't ask her to take my name but she was like, ‘no, of course I'm taking your name’.

Their wedding, which took place just before Christmas, was a low-key affair. The grand total spend on the ceremony has been reported to be less than $18,000 (about £14,000).

Miley and Liam meet on the set of The Last Song in June 2009 and have had an on and off relationship ever since.

They had originally denied rumours that they were a couple but in March 2010, Miley and Liam made their red carpet debut as a couple at an Oscars event, confirming that yes, they are in fact dating.

Later that year, Miley revealed that Liam was largely her muse for Can't Be Tamed. In an interview with MTV, she said, "There are a lot of songs that are about Liam, all of them are about him in a way, but it's also about past relationships that you gotta get over and move on and just about freeing yourself from anything that you feel holds you back."

The pair split not longer after the interview, announcing that Miley's work schedule was the main reason for their breakup.

After attending the LA premiere of the Hunger Games together in 2012, the couple were back on and sparked rumours of an engagement after Miley was seen with a ring on THAT finger.

After enjoying holidays together in the following 12 months, rumours began to circulate that Miley had cheated on Liam, which the pair both denied. But, in August 2013 Miley attended the LA premiere of Paranoia with Liam which was their final red carpet appearance together before breaking off their engagement.

Liam was pictured getting close with Mexican actress and singer Eiza Gonzalez not long after the pair split, which led to Miley breaking down during a performance of Wrecking Ball, a song confirmed to be about Liam, at the iHeartRadio music festival.

It wasn't until January 2016 when rumours about their rekindled relationship began to emerge, after some group photos on Chris' family member's instagram accounts had Miley in the background.

In spring 2016, Miley and Liam’s sister-in-law Elsa Pataky who's married to Liam's brother Chris (who's famous for the Thor franchise) got matching wave tattoos in Australia with Miley later announcing that her and Liam were in fact engaged again.

After over a year of lovey-dovey Instagram posts and the pair staying out of the limelight, Miley's new album dropped in 2017 with the lead single Malibu being about her fiancé.

They also faced rumours that Miley was pregnant with their first child, but she soon put those rumours to bed in a hilarious Twitter post, where she said was "not eggspecting" mocking the famous Instagram Egg that is now the most liked photo on the social media platform.

The pair announced that they were married on Boxing Day last year, with the wedding taking place on Christmas Eve in a small ceremony at their home in Franklin, Tennessee.

Miley is storming the charts with her latest collaboration with Mark Ronson. Their hit, Nothing Breaks Like A Heart has been in the top 10 for the last few weeks.
