A new Mary Poppins sequel has been confirmed more than half a century after the classic original movie.
Directed by Rob Marshall, Disney’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious live action follow-up will be set 20 years on from the first film and is faithfully based on the books penned by Mary Poppins creator PL Travers.
Starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, the 1964 movie was only partially based on PL Travers’ books.
It became a colossal hit thanks to its string of catchy songs (including ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’ and ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’), heart-warming story and brilliant tap dancing routines.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the follow-up will feature songs penned by Hairspray composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and sees nanny Mary returning to the Banks family in Depression era London.
Work is still in its embryonic stages for the movie and Disney is understood to be liaising closely with PL Travers’ estate.
The British author, who died aged 96 in 1996, famously disliked the animated scenes in the first film and ruled out any further adaptations in her lifetime.
A number of Disney sequels are in the works including The Jungle Book, Frozen and a live action Aladdin.
