Kanye West provided one of the huge talking points of the MTV Video Music Awards once again when he told the millions watching he wants to run for President.

During his acceptance speech for his lifetime achievement honour – the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award – at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night Kanye revealed his bold ambitions.

"I don't know what I finna lose after this. It don't matter, though; It's not about me. It's about ideas. New ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth," Kanye said.

"And yes, as you probably could've guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president."

Remarkably deadpan in his delivery, it seemed that Kanye was wholly serious. Incredibly, if Kanye did make it to the White House, that would make Kim Kardashian the First Lady.

Reacting to Kanye’s claims, the Democratic Party tweeted: "Last night @kanyewest declared his candidacy for president in 2020. Welcome to the race, Mr. West. Glad to have you."

They’ve since used Kanye to promote some of their policies!

Always grabbing the headlines, Kanye also appeared to admit to smoking marijuana on the night.

"I will die for the art, for what I believe in and I ain't always gonna be polite,” he said.

"I rolled up a little something. I got the answer. We're the millennials bro."

Miley Cyrus hosted the ceremony and Taylor Swift was the biggest winner of the night taking home four honours including the coveted Video of the Year for ‘Bad Blood.’
