Dame Judi Dench has got her first tattoo at the age of 81 as a birthday present from her daughter.

The actress got ‘Carpe Diem’, which is Latin for ‘Seize the day’, inked on to her wrist which she chose because it’s her motto.

The star previously admitted that she wanted a tattoo to mark her birthday and that her 43-year-old daughter was keen for her to have one too.

It’s her first tattoo, though she previously tricked a film producer into thinking she’d got his name tattoed on her bottom.

It was a joke she played to show her appreciation after being cast as Queen Victoria in the 1997 film Mrs Brown by producer Harvey Weinstein. It led to receiving two BAFTA awards and a Golden Globe for Best Performance.

In January Harvey said in a TV appearance that she'd told him she had a surprise, but hadn't known what to buy a man that has everything.

Then in front of her friends at a Four Seasons Restaurant she unbuckled her trousers to reveal a 'JD loves HW' tattoo on her bottom.

But the actress revealed that although the film producer still thinks it’s real, it was in fact drawn on by her make-up artist.

Judi will appear in Tim Burton’s new film Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children which is due for release in September this year.
