George Clooney Refuses Daily Mail Apology Over Marriage Story

He calls the Mail "the worst kind of tabloid"

George Clooney has refused to accept an apology from The Daily Mail over a ‘fabricated’ story they published about his engagement to Amal Alamuddin.

On Monday, mailonline ran a controversial article claiming that Amal’s mother Baria opposed their marriage on religious grounds.

In a strongly worded USA Today blog post, Clooney accused the British paper of “inciting violence” and "exploiting religious differences where none exist".

The Mail removed the story and on Wednesday apologised "for any distress caused" but continued to insist that the “story was not a fabrication.”

Now in a fresh article, Clooney has snubbed the publication’s apology saying "The Mail knew the story... was false and printed it anyway."

"There is one constant when a person or company is caught doing something wrong," the response began. "The cover-up is always worse."

He concluded: “What separates this from all of the ridiculous things the Mail makes up is that now, by their own admission, it can be proved to be a lie. In fact, a premeditated lie.

“So I thank the Mail for its apology. Not that I would ever accept it, but because in doing so they've exposed themselves as the worst kind of tabloid.

“One that makes up its facts to the detriment of its readers and to all the publications that blindly reprint them.”
