Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has sensationally quit The X Factor to focus on her music career.

In a statement the star said she's 'excited to be recording again'.

"I've missed making music. I have had such an amazing experience being a judge on The X Factor."

"I have learnt so much and enjoyed nurturing talent but I've missed making music and am excited to be recording again.

"I want to thank everybody I have worked with along the way, especially Simon who I love to bits."

According to reports a close friend of the 32-year-old also said: "They have had many discussions about the new series but she has finally made her mind up. Her relationship with Simon is the best it's ever been and they are both incredibly supportive of each other."

Cheryl first stared on the popular talent show in 2008 for three years before returning for her second stint as a judge in 2014.

Cheryl released her last solo album, 'Only Human' back in 2014 but since then has released no new material due to her commitments elsewhere.

Now the 'Fight For This Love' singer is working in the studio with new boyfriend, Liam Payne, on her next album which she hopes to release later this year.

Cheryl's close friend added "She's having a great time in the US with Liam and getting back to her pop roots".

The news comes just a week after it was announced Dermot O'Leary will return to host the show when it returns later in the year.

With former judge, Nick Grimshaw already leaving the panel and Rita Ora's future in doubt, reports suggest Louis Walsh could be returning to the show alongside Simon Cowell.

Despite quitting as a judge, this won't be the last we see of Cheryl on the show. The singer will reportedly return in the live shows to perform her new material.

Auditions for the show are expected to begin this month, so we expect Cheryl’s replacement to be announced very soon.
