Charlie Sheen has opened up about being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and says it could be to blame for his risky behaviours over the years.

The condition affects moods and can swing from extremes of mania, feeling high and overactive, and depression.

Speaking on the Dr Oz Show in America, the actor said that experts had warned him that he could have suffered from the condition at various points over the years.

He also admitted it could be to blame for some of his risky behaviour in the past.

"I've been described or diagnosed by enough people that I guess at some point you have to take a look at it.

"Manic behaviour is usually in the throes of deep partying, deep substance abuse and drinking.

"It doesn't really happen when I'm not doing that."

He said the episodes have always seemed normal to him and although the star isn’t on medication at the moment, he confessed that he would consider it in the future.

The actor had famously denied having any psychological issues in 2011 when he said he wasn't bi-polar, but 'bi-winning'.

In December Charlie revealed he had HIV and that he would work hard on finding a cure.
