Beyoncé’s dad Mathew Knowles has suggested that Jay Z and Solange’s infamous lift fight could have been a publicity stunt.

63-year-old Mathew, who managed Destiny’s Child and steered Beyoncé’s early solo career, called the notorious scuffle a “Jedi mind trick” and proposed that it was done to spike interest in Jay Z and Beyoncé’s joint tour and his daughter Solange’s career.

Referring to the incident, which prompted rumours of marriage problems, Mathew said: "Sometimes (stars need things to) ignite that tour.

“It’s called a ‘Jedi mind trick.’ The Jedi mind trick fools you a lot of the time. So things you see, sometimes, are... (gestures an explosion of smoke).”

Quizzed directly about the fight following the Met Gala charity event back in May, Mathew added to KRBE: “All I know is: everyone is talking about it. Ticket sales went up, Solange’s album sales went up 200 percent...”

Weeks after the alleged incident, CCTV footage was leaked to TMZ showing Solange furiously kicking and slapping Jay Z with Beyoncé looking on.

Soon afterwards, the trio released a statement saying: “Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both have apologised to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.”

The security guard at Manhattan’s Standard Hotel who allegedly leaked the footage was relieved of his job.

Elsewhere in his KRBE interview, Mathew said he hoped Destiny’s Child would reunite for a tour at some point soon.

He said: “When you see Destiny’s Child on TV and you see them doing songs together, slowly, slowly ... there might be a new Destiny’s Child album coming.

“There might be this tour that makes history: Destiny’s Child featuring Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle.”
